From Agent “miss M’
I would like to share with you a puzzling experience I
had recently. I was playing the piano one night after
a long exhausting day of work. I was very tired and
somehow fallen “semi-asleep” while playing and had the
strangest experience. My fingers continued to glide
across the keys freely but I no longer felt any
conscious efforts to control or influence them. I
could very well hear the melody I was playing on the
piano, but somehow I felt detached like I was
listening to some broadcast from the radio or a live
concert performance. The music was flowing naturally
and was quite serene and beautiful yet somewhat
familiar. When I became fully awake again, I was able
to recall and reproduce the melody I heard/played. I
was quite fascinated by what had happened and had a
thousand questions in my head. Was I in an altered
state of mind (half wake/half dream/hypnotic trance?)
and unknowingly retrieved music from a normally
non-accessible part of my brain? Where was the source
of this haunting melody? Did it come from me/my brain
or from some higher consciousness/inspiration? Could
this be a repressed memory of a tune I have heard
previously but I failed to recall or recognize it
during normal consciousness? Could it be a forgotten
memory of a melody from a different time/life?? Since
you are a musician/artist yourself, you may understand
and probably have similar experiences yourself or have
known others who have had similar experiences. If so,
please enlighten me! Any advice/recommendations/ideas?
Do you think it is possible (and worthwhile) to record
brainwaves during piano playing under this “altered
state” and compare that to recordings during normal
alert piano playing??
Let me know what you think.

I have a theory, based on a similar experience.
A persons mind is an interface where we experience first access, that experience is mainly dialogue or images and interprets the outside world for the internal cells of the body and visa-versa, we have gut-feeling and talk about our emotions.
So when we are awake we call this source emotions or gut feelings.
When we are dreaming (unconscious) the minds eye takes its source from cells inside our body which are stored up as memories.
When we dream and become lucid we over ride the cell memories and can paint images onto the mind by controlling our internal feelings/emotions.
Usually the mind works in images, however the dream you had seems like it was auditory as opposed to the usual visual pictures.
I would say that you had an auditory dream from cell memory, and the right side of your brain organised the data into a sequence of patterns which was the familiar melody.
The reason you don’t recognise the notes is because they were stored deep inside cells from a long time ago but the right brain worked them into a sequence.
